There is a ball inside the valve that has a hole through the center in the same direction as the handle. When you turn the handle, the hole closes and seals against the sides of the valve.
 Globe Valve is not the same as a Ball Valve. A Globe Valve has a disc that closes an opening and can be used to throtle the flow. A Ball Vavle is as described above. The Globe Vavles usually have a wheel type valve handle and a ball valve has a lever type handle.
