A globe valve
can be rotated 360 degrees to open or close off a pipe. The packing
washer is usually the main source of leaks. Follow the steps below to
repair a leaking globe valve.
- Adjustable pipe wrench
- Screwdriver
- New packing washer
Use the shut off valve to cut off the water to the valve. Open the valve to release pressure.
Use the adjustable pipe wrench to undo the bolts that hold the body
of the globe valve into its upper covering, called a bonnet. There
should be at least 2 bolts, more if the globe valve unit is large. Use
the screwdriver to pry the valve from the bonnet.
Check the packing washer for corrosion or loose fit. If it is
damaged, replace it with a new washer. If it is intact, check the gasket
and the seat of the globe valve for leakage problems.
