Pros and Cons of Globe Valves
2010-12-20
For HVAC systems, ball valves were preferred to globe valves for many years due to cost factors. As globe valves became more efficient, their cost has come down. Learn about the pros and cons of globe valves and their alternatives as described below.
Pros of Globe Valves
Globe valves are well-suited to systems where the fluid flow is less than 25 gallons per minute (gpm). They are just one standard pipe size smaller than the pipe they regulate, so they fit well with less leakage than ball valves. They can be closed with pressure of 50 pounds per square inch (psi) or less, and handle partial pressure loads more efficiently than ball valves. Globe valves can also manage steam under pressure, which ball valves cannot do.

Cons of Globe Valves
When part of a globe valve fails, you often need to rebuild the entire valve, including the packing washer, seat and gasket. You must also add valve actuators that assist the globe valve to function more efficiently.
