Selecting between globe valves and gate valves is critical for piping system efficiency. Working Principle Difference

Gate valves feature a gate that moves perpendicular to flow. They are designed strictly for ON/OFF service—fully open or fully closed. When open, the gate retracts completely, offering near-zero flow resistance.

Globe valves feature a disc that moves along the seat centerline. The disc position directly controls flow rate, making them ideal for throttling and regulation.

Functional Comparison

Gate valves are primarily for isolation only, with very low flow resistance. They are best suited for infrequent cycling and have a long stroke length. Globe valves excel at both regulation and isolation, with moderate flow resistance. They handle frequent cycling well, have a short stroke (about one-quarter of seat diameter), and offer high wear resistance due to less friction.

How to Choose: Quick Guide

Choose gate valves when service requires only fully open or closed positions, minimum pressure drop is essential, pipeline diameter is large (DN50 to DN1000), or flow direction may reverse. Typical applications include main water lines and oil or gas transmission.

Choose globe valves when flow regulation or throttling is needed, the valve operates frequently, high temperature or high pressure conditions exist, or line size is small to medium (DN10 to DN500). Common applications include boiler feedwater, pump bypass lines, and steam systems.

Technical Specifications

Both valve types share common specifications. Pressure ratings range from PN1.0 to PN16.0MPa. Temperature range spans from -196°C to 700°C. Available materials include WCB carbon steel, 304 and 316 stainless steel, and titanium, making them suitable for water, steam, oil, and various chemical media.
